Being a music geek, I always love discovering new bands, especially live. One of my favorite parts about music festivals is catching a band I have never heard of and walking away with a new obsession. Unless time simply doesn’t allow it, I always make sure to show up for an opener or two when I attend shows, because you never know who you are going to fall in love with.

That is exactly what happened with Secret Someones, a four piece from Brooklyn, when I caught Jukebox the Ghost earlier this month. I got to the Knitting Factory early, not knowing what was in store before JBTG took the stage. As soon as Secret Someones kicked off their set, I was glad I was early and I was immediately upset that I hadn’t heard of them before that moment.

Secret Someones is Bess Rogers, Hannah Winkler, Lelia Broussard and Zach Jones. They have a sound that would be complimentary on an early 2000s teen movie soundtrack. Had they been around, Tina Fey totally would have thrown them on the Mean Girls soundtrack. They have that catchy, gritty pop sound that never gets old. Their three part harmonies soar through time, making you wonder if the music was made in 1997, 2003, or 2017. But you don’t really care either way, as long as you can turn it up louder. This is sing-into-your-hairbrush-on-your-bed music. This is driving with the windows music. This is empowering montage music. This is music that needs to be on your iPod like, yesterday.

Their live show is full of energy, and holds up to the strengths of the recordings. Every member of the band is endearing and has incredible stage presence. Even though they are probably strangers to you, it feels like you are watching your friends on stage. So why don’t you go ahead and see your new friends on stage? Lucky for you, SS have some dates coming up. And you are going to want to be there.

Check out a track from their self titled EP below (along with an adorable interview done by Kids Interview Bands) and keep an eye out for a full length album hopefully coming soon.

Where most people are water, she is latte and she liked goats before Buzzfeed thought they were cool. She is also wildly hilarious on Twitter.
